Abstract
The Eustachian tube is a passage that connects the middle ear to the nasopharynx and regu-lates the pressure within the middle ear. If there is persistent inflammation in the mucosa dueto infection or allergic reactions, the opening of the Eustachian tube may not function proper-ly, leading to obstructive Eustachian tube dysfunction. If symptoms persist even after threemonths of conservative treatment, balloon Eustachian tuboplasty may be considered. Al-though rare, severe complications such as subcutaneous emphysema, pneumomediastinum, and pneumothorax can occur, but there have been no reported cases of such complications inthe Republic of Korea so far. Here, we present a case of a 52-year-old male who developed sub-cutaneous emphysema and pneumomediastinum after undergoing balloon Eustachian tubo-plasty and discuss prevention and treatment for possible complications following the procedure.
